What can I do?

Reduce

  • Buy less.

  • Buy products with less packaging

  • Stop junk mail

  • Junk Mail/ Paper Facts

    • Every person gets junk mail that adds up to one and a half trees each year.
    • The average person gets 1.5 personal letters for each 10.8 pieces of junk mail.
  • Remove your name from national mailing lists for FREE

Reuse

  • Fix and reuse things before throwing them away

  • Give things to Salvation Army, yard sales, swaps, www.FreeCycle.org, or Craig's List

Recycle

  • Set up recycling areas at home:  kitchen, home office, garage

  • Recycle every scrap of paper

  • Recycle glass, metal, #1 plastics (look for #1 on container)

Compost

  • Set up a compost container in the kitchen

  • Get or make a composting bin

So what's the problem?

Landfills are full and occupy acres of city land.

Transporting waste burns fuel.

Methane gas from trash/landfills pollutes the air.

Raw materials are limited, expensive and dangerous to extract.

What are the Benefits?

If we all recycled paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum we would...

  • Save Marlborough $1million each year

  • Save precious land from being used as landfills

  • Reduce greenhouse gasses and improve air quality

  • Improve land and water quality

  • Reduce time/energy wasted on trash and increase our leisure time

  • Feel good about doing something for the environment!

  • Paper recycling benefits:

  •       Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees.

  •       One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year.

  •       More than 1/3 of all paper fiber used to make paper comes from recycled paper.

General Information

Did you know?

When you renovate, you can ask your building contractor to recycle building materials.  This is standard practice for some companies!  Ask your contractor about this before you renovate.

Making a Difference - True Story!  One Marlborough resident noticed a neighbor was not recycling.  So one day he got a free recycling bin and knocked on the neighbor's door.  He visited with a recycling bin, a smile and a handshake.  The next week the neighbor had the recycling bin on the curb!

Way to make a difference!
